Dental Bridge from your Auckland Dentist

What is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge is one of the solution for a missing tooth or teeth.
Dental bridges are fixed prosthetic devices (unlike removable devices such as dentures) and they are used close the gap created by one or more missing teeth.
They are cemented to natural teeth or implants surrounding the space where the tooth once stood. In this way, the bridge, made up of three crowns is supported by the teeth either side of the gap.
Sometimes more than one missing tooth can be replaced in this way.

As with crowns, you have a choice of materials for bridges. Your dentist can help you decide which to use, based on the location of the missing tooth (or teeth), its function, aesthetic considerations and cost. Porcelain or ceramic bridges can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth.

What is the Procedure for Dental Bridge?

During your first visit, the teeth adjacent to the gap are prepared. These teeth are recontoured by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. Then, impressions of your teeth are made and are sent to the laboratory for the technician to form a model of the bridge. Your dentist will make a temporary bridge for you to wear to protect the exposed teeth and gums while your bridge is being made.

At your next appointment, your temporary bridge will be removed and the new one will be checked and adjusted to achieve a proper fit. Then the bridge is permanently cemented into place.

Why do I need to close the gap caused by a missing tooth?

Gaps left by missing teeth can cause the remaining teeth to shift, which can result in a bad bite, gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
Bridges and crowns help prevent this from happening.

How Long do Dental Bridges Last?

While bridges can last a lifetime, they do sometimes come loose or fall out. The most important step you can take to ensure the longevity of your bridge is to practice good oral hygiene. A bridge can lose its support if the teeth or bone holding it in place are damaged by dental disease. Keep your gums and teeth healthy by Brushing twice a day and flossing daily. Also see your dentist and hygienist regularly for checkups and professional cleanings.
To prevent damage to your new bridge, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects.
